Happy Bastille Day! Brigitte Macron’s Favorite Designers on What It’s Like to Dress France’s First Lady

Much has been said about Brigitte Macron’s mini skirts and skinny jeans. The 64-year-old First Lady of France isn’t concerned with dressing the part of political wife; she favors a wardrobe consisting of leather and contemporary off-the-runway looks from Louis Vuitton. But aside from her most daring fashion choices—mainly those that show off her age-defying figure—Macron does have one other signature piece of clothing in the blazer. She favors sharp, sculptural pieces by Balmain and Alexandre Vauthier in particular, two of the country’s luxury labels. As First Lady, Macron is an avid supporter of France’s homegrown fashion.

As fond as Macron is of these native French designers, the ones who dress her, particularly those responsible for her incroyable suiting, are doubly honored. As Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing explains, “While my admiration for Brigitte Macron may be tinged somewhat by my relief in the results of our recent election, the reality is that politics aside, I find her to be an incredible person.” He adds, “she is someone who shows us all what it means to be truly modern—in both fashion and life.” Macron has worn Balmain often and was spotted cheering on her country at the French Cup Final soccer match in late May wearing the label’s black blazer with gold buttons. “She obviously has great taste and knows how to balance and mix her clothing choices perfectly,” Rousteing says. “She is as chic as she is cool and always remains true to her own identity. And knowing that she believes in French creators and wants to support us—well, we are beyond lucky to have her as a new, powerful supporter.”Earlier this week, the first lady stepped out in a red, padded shoulder Alexandre Vauthier blazer. Much like Rousteing, Vauthier also believes that Macron is the embodiment of feminine French style. “Her name rings throughout the world as a reference of style and confidence,” he says. “Her energy, allure, determination, and sensibility make her a superior female leader. We all supported the ultra-intelligent campaign of Emmanuel Macron, but we all know that behind every brilliant man there is an even more exceptional woman!”Today, as France celebrates Bastille Day, the country’s fashion community is saluting their style icon. Dressed with confidence in her blazers, minis, and jeans, Macron has the kind of cool power wardrobe that is worth honoring. “I applaud Brigitte Macron’s strength and fearlessness,” Rousteing says. And the rest of the world is cheering right along with him.
