Meet Rila Fukushima, the Newest Member of the Louis Vuitton Squad

Louis Vuitton’s actress clique has always been one of fashion’s coolest, but yesterday’s Resort 2018 extravaganza near Kyoto, Japan, marked a turning point for the international squad. When Rila Fukushima opened the show, it was the first time one of designer Nicolas Ghesquière’s cinematic favorites had graced the Vuitton runway. The Japanese actress provided the Kansai Yamamoto–influenced collection with a local muse, one whose personal style embodies the country’s eclectic cool. Unlike most models, Fukushima never dreamed of seeing herself on magazine covers. As a fan of the original supermodel trinity, she wanted to work as a booker and sent her résumé to multiple Tokyo agencies, before catching the eye of a Bon Image agent, who saw potential in the photo she’d attached to her CV.

Soon, Fukushima found herself in front of the camera and in high demand. Quickly snapping up appearances for brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Kenzo, and the Gap, Fukushima defied the expectation that a model needs height to be successful. She followed up that success with roles in action-packed hits like The Wolverine, Game of Thrones, and Arrow, becoming a regular presence in movies and on television. Through it all, Fukushima has maintained a look that merges edgy and cute. Often, she finds ways to ground Ghesquière’s futurism in reality and has a special knack for making even the most complex designs seem wearable. When she stepped out in glossy black boots and a miniskirt for a celebration of Vuitton’s Jeff Koons collaboration in April, it registered as sweet, rather than overtly sexy. Her turn in a sheer, cutout-laden dress for the Tokyo premiere of Ghost in the Shell in March was a study in head-to-toe black, while her Instagram provides a frequent crash course in taking LV to the street. Joining Ghesquière, Jennifer Connelly, Michelle Williams, and Léa Seydoux on the cover of Japanese Vogue for June, it’s clear that Fukushima has earned a permanent place in the gang—but her compelling style and key spot at Resort make her the member to watch now.
