Emma's Reasons To Celebrate

As Emma Watson enjoys her 27th birthday today, the actress has more than one reason to celebrate as, while we are only just in April, she has already had an extraordinary 2017. Continuing her gender-equality campaign (which she brought to the attention of the world's university campuses towards the end of last year), she has also continued her feminist book club; slammed her critics who said she couldn't simultaneously pose baring her breasts and still stand for female liberation; taken legal action against hackers after it was confirmed her security had been breached; starred in Beauty and the Beast, which is already being heralded as the most successful live-action remake of all time; and now, thanks to her all-singing, all-dancing efforts as the film's heroine Belle, is set to surpass Jennifer Lawrence as the highest-paid actress in the world.

Although she received a sum of £2 million for the part, Watson negotiated a deal that makes her entitled to a proportion of the film's revenues, which is predicted to net her a further £15 million since it was confirmed the box office has pulled in over $1 billion so far, reported the Evening Standard last night. Added to her earnings from the Harry Potter franchise (which is estimated to be around the £50 million mark), Watson is clearly winning at her own game.Up next? The lead part in the film adaptation of The Circle, based of Dave Egger's 2013 novel of the same name, which has its world premiere on April 27 and is already garnering box-office buzz - and thereafter a hiatus. "I'm taking a year away from acting to focus on two things, really. My own personal development is one," she said in conversation with feminist writer Bell Hooks in an interview with Paper Magazine last year. With all she has achieved so far this year, it sounds like the perfect time to sit back and reflect on her success.
