Surprise: 'Sherlock' Season 4 is finally happening, has begun filming

The BBC and Mark Gatiss revealed Wednesday that shooting for the fourth series/season of Sherlock  the massively popular detective series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman — has officially begun.

Thankfully, a release from the BBC reveals more details. Here's the logline for the show's fourth batch of episodes:

Series four begins with the nation’s favourite detective, the mercurial Sherlock Holmes, back once more on British soil, as Doctor Watson and his wife, Mary, prepare for their biggest ever challenge - becoming parents for the first time.

A statement from co-creators, writers and executive producers Gatiss and Steven Moffat gives a few more clues about what to expect: "Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake. This is the story we’ve been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax...”

The news comes just a week after Gatiss sent fans into a frenzy by teasing Season 4's imminent arrival, via a cryptic tweet.

There is, of course, no word yet on when we'll actually be able to see the climax he and Moffat tease in the release — but hey, small steps, right?
